A Community Buried Alive. A Race Against Time.

It happened in minutes. As torrential rain hammered Solok Regency in West Sumatra, a hillside behind the district government office gave way sending a wall of mud, rock, and debris crashing down onto homes, offices, and a mosque. By the time the rain eased, nearly 60 cm of thick mud had swallowed entire buildings, buried a vital bridge, and cut off the main highway connecting communities to the outside world.

There was no warning. No time to save what mattered most. Families who had gone to sleep in their own homes woke if they slept at all to find their streets gone, replaced by a river of mud, uprooted trees, and debris.

Kayu Aro: A Community Erased in an Instant

In Jorong Kayu Aro, Gunung Talang District, the damage is almost impossible to comprehend. The local mosque the heart of community life, where generations had gathered to pray, celebrate, and mourn together now sits buried under landslide debris, its minaret one of the few things still visible above the wreckage. A bridge connecting Solok to Arosuka, used daily by thousands of residents, workers, and schoolchildren, is gone under metres of mud, severing a lifeline this community depended on. An estimated 100 homes have been destroyed or damaged. Around 50 people including children and the elderly are now displaced, sheltering wherever they can find space: a police station, a government residence, a community hall. Many left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. They have no idea when, or if, they'll be able to go home.

They've Lost Everything and the Danger Isn't Over

When a disaster like this strikes, the mud is only the beginning of the crisis. Families now face days without clean water. Without safe, permanent shelter. Without the basic means to even start rebuilding their lives. Stagnant, contaminated water sitting in and around damaged homes threatens to bring disease into shelters that are already stretched thin, putting children and the elderly at even greater risk. 

Days after the disaster, heavy machinery has only been able to clear the main road and the government complex. For dozens of families whose homes lie further from that road, the mud hasn't moved and neither has the help. Not everyone affected has received aid yet. Every day that passes without support is another day a family spends sleeping on a stranger's floor, wondering if their home and their life can ever be put back together.

Every Day Without Help Is a Day Closer to Crisis

This isn't a story from weeks ago. This is happening right now. Families are digging through mud with their bare hands, salvaging what little they can, while they wait for machinery, clean water, and basic supplies to reach them. Children who once played in these streets are now sleeping in shelters, uncertain of what tomorrow holds.
