Help Build a Safe Bridge for Children Risking Their Lives for School

Help children and teachers in Wae Kuse, Indonesia, replace a fragile wooden crossing with a safer bridge connecting their village to school.

In a remote village in eastern Indonesia, children begin each school day by crossing a fragile wooden bridge over a river.

Wae Kuse is a small rural community in Siru Village, West Manggarai, on the island of Flores. Flores is part of East Nusa Tenggara, one of Indonesia’s easternmost provinces, where many communities still face limited access to basic infrastructure.

For the children of Wae Kuse, the wooden bridge is the only direct route to school. Its damaged and unstable surface makes every crossing difficult. During the rainy season, the river rises, the wooden planks become slippery, and the journey becomes even more dangerous.

Still, the children continue to cross because their school is waiting on the other side.

Their teachers also use the same bridge every day. Despite the difficult conditions, they continue showing up so the children can learn, grow, and build a better future.

No child should have to risk their safety simply to attend school.

Human Initiative Europe is raising funds to help build a safer suspension bridge for the people of Wae Kuse. The planned bridge will be approximately 16 metres long and 1.5 metres wide, providing a safer and more reliable route for students, teachers, families, and local residents.

The bridge is expected to benefit approximately 506 families, or more than 2,100 people. It will help children reach school more safely, support teachers in continuing their work, and improve access to essential services and economic activities for the wider community.

This is more than a bridge.
