Water Kitchen Support for Fire Survivors in Kemayoran, Jakarta
Human Initiative Europe, in collaboration with Human Initiative, has once again provided basic needs services through the Water Kitchen program for residents affected by the massive fire in the Gempol area, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. This incident occurred due to an electrical short circuit on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and has left more than 1,700 residents homeless. Currently, the survivors are taking refuge in emergency tents provided by the local government behind the Central Jakarta Police Office.
The fire that struck the densely populated area of Kemayoran caught residents off guard. Within hours, the flames engulfed hundreds of homes, forcing thousands to abandon their belongings to save themselves. According to witnesses, the fire started in one of the residents' homes due to an electrical short circuit and quickly spread to other houses.
Human Initiative's Quick Response
In response to this situation, Human Initiative immediately deployed its emergency response team to support the survivors. One of the main forms of assistance provided is the operation of the Water Kitchen, which supplies ready-to-eat meals and warm drinks to residents at the evacuation site.
Water Kitchen serves as an initial solution to meet the basic needs of survivors, especially in the critical post-disaster period. This facility operates with the involvement of Human Initiative volunteers who work together to prepare logistics on-site.
Faris, a Human Initiative volunteer at the location, reported, "The main needs right now are hygiene kits, personal clothing, medicines, sleeping mats, and school supplies, considering many children still need to continue their studies. Additionally, temporary tents are also urgently needed, as many survivors have not yet received adequate temporary housing."
